Serving personnel and its reflection by the Czech society at the break of the 19th and 20th centuries (From the life of urban maids)
The diploma thesis is devoted to the research of female servants in the urban environment at the break of the 19th and 20th centuries in the Czech countries. Besides the statistical data about the number, age, length of service, mobility, and employer of serving women and girls, the thesis deals with the life cycle of an urban maid - from her decision and entry into service, accommodation, work duties, meals, clothes, and hygiene; through relationships with individual members of the employer family, spending of free time, and creating love relationships; to the retirement from service. The goal of the work was to describe the everyday life of an urban maid in Bohemia in the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century and to note the changes of the legal and social position of maids during this period.
