THE FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY

 

The Faculty of Philosophy established on 1 January 2006 is affiliated with the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. The nucleus of the institution became the Institute of History and the Department of Czech Studies, both previously incorporated in the Faculty of Education, though the former had been affiliated to it from 2003 as an autonomous body.

Currently there are eight accredited institutes working within the Faculty of Philosophy: Institute of History, Institute of Archaeology, Institute of Archives Studies, Institute of Bohemian Studies, Institute of Aesthetics, Institute of History of Arts, Institute of Romance studies and newly Institute of European Territorial Studies. The Faculty of Philosophy offers accredited degree programmes at bachelor, master and Ph.D. levels. The fields of study at the bachelor level are Archaeology, Archival Science, Bohemian Studies, Czech for Foreigners, History and Romance Philology. The fields of study offered by the faculty at the master level are History, Bohemian Studies and Archival Science. Czech History and History of Modern Czech Literature can be studied at the Ph.D. level.

At present there are two constitutive teams of scholars operating within the scope of two research projects. Both projects, Social Development in the Czech Lands in the Early Modern Age - Structures, Individuals, Relations and Institutions of Power and The History of Czech Nineteenth-Century Literature within Supranational Contexts, have been carried out in cooperation with the partner institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

There are two specialized research centres. One of them is The Centre for Early Modern Studies run by the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences and the Institute of History of the University of South Bohemia. The main purpose of its activities is to publish critical editions of historical sources referring to early modern Czech history. The Centre for the Study of the Czech Avant-garde, bringing together researchers from the Institute of Bohemian Studies of the University of South Bohemia and the Institute of Czech and Comparative Literature and Literary Theory of the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University in Prague. Their project is aimed at interdisciplinary research of modernist and avant-garde activities in the artistic and literary domains within Czechoslovakia and Middle Europe, with the core interest in the first half of the twentieth century.

The Faculty of Philosophy is engaged in many other researches specializing in a variety of fields, such as Czech linguistics, cultural history, aesthetics, or South Bohemian archaeology. All of these activities are regurarly supported by individual grants awarded by the Czech Science Foundation.

The Faculty staff annually holds a number of conferences and symposiums and its members participate in similar activities at home and abroad
